FASTING AND ABSTIENCE
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the major days for fasting and abstinence - in
general it is for those between the age of 18 and 60 years of age.
Everyone
over 14 years of age is bound to observe the law of abstinence. Abstinence from
meat is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays within the season of
Lent.
On
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, everyone is bound to observe the law of fast. On
these two days, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless
meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s
needs; but together they should not equal another full meal.
Fasting
and abstinence are forms of penance and a response to the Lord’s call to
conversion of life.
The
practice of “giving up something” for Lent is part of this same requirement in
the penitential season of Lent, though what you have to give up is not specified.
Dear brothers and sisters, Lent culminates in the Paschal
Triduum, in which this year, too, we shall celebrate divine justice - the
fullness of charity, gift, salvation. May this penitential season be for every
Christian a time of authentic conversion and intense knowledge of the mystery
of Christ, who came to fulfill every justice. With these sentiments, I
cordially impart to all of you my apostolic blessing". (Message of His Holiness Benedict XVI for Lent
2010)
The
Little Black Book Lenten Companion
is available at the doors of the church. The
holy season of Lent speaks to our daily struggles and sorrows, showing how the
answer to all life’s troubles is found in the Mystery of Jesus Christ. This
little booklet provides a series of reflections to guide you through every day
of Lent into the heart of that Mystery.
