The New Roman Missal: The Gloria
From the
First Sunday of Advent, when we begin to use the new translation of the Roman
Missal, until Christmas, we won’t say the Gloria. Don’t worry; that beautiful
song of praise to God has not been eliminated from the Mass. It is simply never said during Advent or
Lent. (The only exception will be on
December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, when it is included.)
Nevertheless,
I want to tell you what to expect, for the Gloria will change more than any other
prayer that the people say. I think it’s easiest to show you a side-by-side comparison. Changes are in bold.
Current Translation New Translation
Glory to God in the highest, Glory to God in the
highest,
and peace to
his people on earth.
and on earth peace to people of good will.

almighty God and Father, we

Because the Gloria has changed so much,
you’ll see that its musical settings are changing completely. We’ll work in some practice time before Christmas!
In the
interest of brevity, I won’t discuss here the reasons for the many changes,
except to say that most are intended to make the English translation conform
with the Latin. And once we are
including the Gloria in Mass, we’ll talk about the new version in a homily.
Next week
I’ll discuss changes in the Liturgy of the Word. In the meantime, remember to send me your
questions about the new Roman Missal!
